peaksaver PLUS® FAQs

Click on a question below:

  • What should I know about the peaksaver PLUS® program?

    +

During hot summer weekdays, when central air conditioners are running at their maximum, the demand for electricity is at its highest. You can join the other households in Ontario to help manage electricity use when demand is high by enrolling one or more of the following pieces of equipment in the peaksaver PLUS® program:

    • a central air conditioner - excluding heat pump
    • an electric water heater
    • a pool pump for an inground pool

By enroling in peaksaver PLUS®, you’re showing your commitment to conservation and you’re helping the reliability of our electricity system.

Enrolling is easy and it’s free of charge! An authorized technician will come at a convenient time and install a load management device on your central air conditioner, electric water heater or inground pool pump. In the case of your central air conditioner, this may increase your home’s temperature by only 1°or 2°C for short periods of time. In the case of your electric water heater, the water may get slightly cooler and for pool pumps there should be no noticeable change. Your load management device would only be activated during weekdays between 12 noon and 7 p.m. and never on weekends or statutory holidays. Each activation will last for a maximum of four hours.

  • Can I enroll in the peaksaver PLUS® program?

    +

Any residential customer of a participating LDC who has central air conditioning, an electric Water Heater, or a Pool Pump is eligible for the peaksaver PLUS® program. You must own the home or building, or have approval from the landlord.

If you are renting a water heater from a rental company you MUST have written approval from the rental company.

Business customers are eligible if your air conditioners and water heater are approximately the same size as those used by residential customers. If you have your landlord or property manager's approval to participate, have them contact us to enroll in the program.

  • How does the program work?

    +

Once you are enrolled in peaksaver PLUS®, an authorized technician will come to your home to install a load management device on your central air conditioner, electric water heater or inground pool pump. Once the device is installed, it can be remotely activated to slightly reduce your central air conditioner’s, electric water heater’s or pool pump’s electricity demand automatically.

    Activations would only occur:

    • on those occasional hot and humid summer days when the electricity system may become stretched to its limit and electricity consumption is at its highest.
    • on weekdays between 12 noon and 7 p.m. from May 1st to September 30th, and never on weekends or holidays.
    • for a maximum of 4 hours during any one activation.

Your central air conditioner fan will continue to operate so that there will only be a 1° or 2° change in temperature of your home. The electric water heater or pool pump will be shut off. Most customers don't notice a difference because the water heater already has heated water in it, which it doesn't cool significantly in the four-hour activations under normal circumstances. Pool pump customers will not experience a noticeable change either.

  • When will the program launch?
    +

The program launch date varies by participating LDC. To find out more, visit your LDCís website.
  • Do I receive anything for participating?

    +

Apart from saving electricity and benefiting the environment, a FREE Energy Display will be provided to customers who sign up for the peaksaver PLUS® program and have the device installed.

  • When will the program launch?

    +

The program will be launching in May 2013.

  • Will this give access to any other systems in my house?

    +

Absolutely not -- we will not have access to any other system in your house. If you choose to participate in peaksaver PLUS®, your participating electric utility will only have access to your central air conditioner. So you can always remain in control of your whole house.

  • Will it cost me anything to participate?

    +

It will not cost you anything to participate and there is no maintenance cost. Just for signing up and having the device installed, you will receive a free Energy Display.

  • How much money could the peaksaver PLUS® program potentially save me?

    +

You may not see savings directly on your bill, but this program will save everyone money by keeping the cost of electricity lower in the future by reducing the need to import electricity. The Energy Display can also save you between 3-10% on your hydro bill if used correctly.

  • Can I really make a difference by participating?

    +

Yes. By participating, you and thousands of others will allow us to reduce the strain on the electrical system during peak periods. By doing very little on your part, you are making a significant contribution to conserving electricity and helping to improve our environment.

We expect that the peaksaver PLUS® program will reduce the demand on the electrical system. This means there will be less need to import electricity and will save everyone money by keeping electric prices low.

  • What do I do if I don't own the house or business property? Can I still enroll?

    +

Yes you can still enroll. What we are asking customers who do have landlords is to ask for a letter of permission to have the peaksaver PLUS® device (switch or thermostat depending on LDC) installed at your residence. All you need to do is have your landlord notify us and give us permission to install the peaksaver (switch or thermostat depending on LDC).

  • I live in a town home, am I eligible?

    +

If your unit has a separate central air conditioning unit, you are eligible for the peaksaver PLUS® Program.

  • How do I request that my equipment not be controlled on a particular date?

    +

If you would like to opt out on a particular date, please see the contact information for further assistance.

  • Do I have to adjust my thermostat or change any other settings?
    +

No, participating in the program is easy and requires no effort, time or investment.
  • What is the peaksaver PLUS® program?

    +

Electricity Distributors along with support from the Ontario Power Authority are making it simple for Ontarians to do their part to conserve

  • Won't it be sweltering when I get home?

    +

Residents who participated last summer said they hardly noticed when the cycle-down had taken place. The peaksaver PLUS® event is typically transparent to the participant as there is only a very small rise in temperature over the four-hour period.

  • Won't there be a power surge when it comes back on?

    +

No, the technology takes this into account. The remotely controlled devices only reduce the electricity usage--they do not turn off the equipment. Also, the air conditioners participating in the program are managed randomly to avoid a power surge.

  • Businesses must use much more electricity than residential customers? Why are you asking regular homeowners to take these measures?

    +

Everyone eligible in Ontario can join in to help manage our electricity use when demand is high. The peaksaver PLUS® program is also aimed at small commercial businesses that use less than 50kW.  The peaksaver PLUS® program is designed for homes and small business, and there are other conservation programs tailored for large commercial and industrial properties as well. For example, there is a Demand Response program for businesses to reduce their electricity consumption during peak periods and shift their usage to other times of the day when demand is lower.

No you do not have to participate. peaksaver PLUS® is a voluntary program and you can opt out at any time. We’re confident that people will find it to be an easy way to help reduce the strain on our electricity system and benefit the environment.

  • Will this give access to any other systems in my house?

    +

Absolutely not -- we will not have access to any other system in your house. If you choose to participate in peaksaver PLUS®, your participating electric utility will only have access to the appliances you choose, your central air conditioner, electric hot water heater and/or pool pump for an inground pool. So you can always remain in control of your whole house.

  • Do I have to be home when this is installed?

    +

They will show you how to use it and how effective it can be in seeing and managing your electricity use help achieve savings all year.

  • I donít want strangers in my house. How will I know if the people who arrive are legitimate?
    +

I can understand your concern for security. Rest assured that the installation will be done by qualified, certified professionals working on behalf of your LDC. When the installers come to your door you can ask them to produce identification that will show that they are working on behalf of your LDC.
  • What if they break my system? Will they pay to fix it?
    +

  • What about other damage to my home such as too much dryness? Who is liable?
    +

The installation professionals will assess whether your home is suitable at the time of installation. They are certified, qualified professionals. As well, the device installed only reduces the air-conditionerís electricity usage during the peak times of the day and does not otherwise change the air-conditionerís operation.
  • What does the environment have to do with it?
    +

In periods where electricity demand is very high, it becomes more likely that we will rely on coal-fired plants to meet the shortfall. Coal-fired plants release greenhouse gases and contribute to air pollution.

  • What is the SmartPeak Hot Water Tank Pilot all about?

    +

SmartPeak is a pilot program designed to reduce electricity use during peak times when demand is very high, usually on very cold winter days. We will do this by occasionally powering down your hot water tank during peak times, since water heating is the third highest consumer of electricity in Newfoundland homes.

Participation in the takeCHARGE SmartPeak Pilot includes:

    • $50 credit on your electricity bill (2 x $25).
    • A chance to win an iPad.
    • A report on your hot water usage and tips on saving energy at the end of the pilot.
    • A meter will be installed on your hot water tank, and your home meter will be replaced to measure pilot impacts.
    • Helping the electricity system and the environment.
  • Why is Newfoundland Power offering this pilot program?

    +

This type of program is being used to reduce electricity use during peak times in many other places. This pilot will provide us with valuable information about the benefits of offering this type of program on a wider scale in Newfoundland.

  • Who can participate in the Newfoundland Power's SmartPeak Pilot?

    +

The pilot is only available to 500 participants in certain neighbourhoods.  Participants must have an electric hot water tank. If you don’t own your home, you can still participate if you have the written permission of the owner / landlord. Space is limited. Enrollment will be on a first come basis.

  • Can Newfoundland Power turn on or off my hot water tank at any time?

    +

The device will only be activated on scheduled days or during periods when demand for electricity is very high, but not on weekends or holidays.  Activity outside of these periods would only occur if there is extremely high demand on the electricity system. The maximum number of events during the 17 week pilot will be fifteen (15), which will occur between 7:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. and/or 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on weekdays. Participants will be notified via email or text when the hot water tank meter will be activated.

  • Will I notice a change in the temperature of my hot water?

    +

Typically participants won’t notice a change in water temperature and the tank will still be full of hot water.  Your hot water tank will not be affected for more than 4 hours at a time.

  • Can this cause damage to my hot water tank?

    +

No, the meter is designed to safely switch your hot water tank on and off without affecting how your hot water tank operates on a daily basis.

  • Will this impact any other appliances or equipment in my home?  Will you be able to control my whole house?

    +

No, this will not impact any other equipment in your home.  Only electricity to the hot water tank will be impacted during the pilot.

  • I already have a high-efficiency hot water tank– should I bother participating in this program?

    +

Yes. Although a high-efficiency electric hot water tank uses less electricity than an older, less-efficient model, any reduction in electricity use is helpful when demand for electricity is very high.

  • What is the Regulated Price Plan (RPP) Pilot?
    +

This project is part of the Ontario Energy Board’s (OEB) ongoing efforts to better understand and engage with consumers. Through its Regulated Price Plan Roadmap initiative, utilities across Ontario in partnership with the OEB will be testing different electricity price plans designed to give greater consumer control and help Ontario’s power system run more efficiently.

  • How long does the RPP program last?
    +

The pilot lasts 12 months and qualified customers can expect for their energy usage to be monitored for the full 12 month program. For participants who join the Critical Peak Pricing pilot there will be an additional three months price protection period where you will be subject to the applicable CPP events within those months; however, you will not be responsible for any costs or savings. The purpose of this is to provide a learning period where you can start to adjust your energy usage during and around these events.

  • Do I receive anything for participating?
    +

Apart from saving electricity and benefiting the environment, all participants who register will receive 150 Aeroplan Miles. Customers who sign up for the Critical Peak Pricing pilot and qualify to participate will receive $100, $25 at the beginning of the program and $75 upon completion.

  • Does it cost anything to participate?
    +

It will not cost you anything to participate and there is no maintenance cost.

  • Can I really make a difference by participating?
    +

Yes. By participating, you and thousands of others will allow us to reduce the strain on the electrical system during peak periods. You will be making a significant contribution to conserving electricity and helping to improve our environment.

We expect that the program will reduce the demand on the electrical system. This means there will be less need to import electricity that saves everyone money by keeping electricity prices low.

  • Businesses must use more electricity than residential customers. Why are you asking regular home owners to take these measures?
    +

Everyone can help reduce strain on the electrical system. There are many conservation programs for commercial properties and industry as well. For example, there is a program similar to this program wherein companies sign contracts to reduce their electricity consumption during peak periods.

  • Do I have to participate?
    +

No, you do not have to participate. This is a voluntary program and you can opt out at any time. We’re confident that people will find it to be an easy way to help reduce the strain on our electricity system and benefit the environment.

  • What does the environment have to do with it?
    +

In periods where electricity demand is very high, it becomes more likely that we will rely on coal-fired plants to meet the shortfall. Coal-fired plants release greenhouse gases and contribute to air pollution.

  • How does the Critical Peak Pricing (CPP) Program work?
    +

With the permission of the qualified customer, a load controller will be installed on up to three circuit breakers at your electrical panel. Additionally the customer will also receive a smart plug and a smart energy hub, as well as a reduced off-peak energy rate. In the situation of a CPP event (event lasting for an hour), a notification will be sent to the customer to inform them of an upcoming increased rate for energy, and that the devices connected to the load controller and plug will be turned off for this period. This automated control helps you save energy and money during these critical events. The customer always has the option to "override" these events and keep power to their devices, however at the increased rate.

  • What constitutes a "CPP event" and how often do they occur?

    +

A CPP event is simulated to replicate of when the demand for energy in Ontario is unusually high, which causes stress on the power system. By powering down major appliances during this time, Ontario residents can help alleviate this stress, thus improving the efficiency of the power grid. CPP events are estimated to last for approximately one hour and will occur 36 times within a 12 month period.

  • Can I enroll if I don't own the house I'm currently in? What if I live in a townhouse or condo?
    +

You can easily enroll in the Real-Time program if you don't own the property you are living in. For the Critical Peak Pricing program, we are asking customers to ask for a letter of permission from their landlord giving us permission to install the program devices (load controller) at the residence.

If you live in a townhouse and have access to a London Hydro meter that exclusively monitors the energy usage in your home, then you are eligible for the pilot. Unfortunately, customers that live in condos and apartment buildings are not eligible for the pilot.
  • Why does London Hydro have this program anyway?
    +

We are always looking for ways to help our customers and our province conserve electricity to ensure a continual supply of electricity. Programs like this help everyone in the long run by reducing the need to import electricity and reducing the pressures on our distribution system.

  • How does the Real Time program work?
    +

You will receive a smart plug and a smart energy hub which will provide you with real-time data for your entire home as well as any additional devices plugged into the smart plug.

  • Do I get to keep the installed hardware after the duration of the program?
    +

Yes, all of the hardware you receive is yours to keep!

  • What tools can help me save energy?
    +

Your Trickl App includes lots of ways to help you save energy!

    • View your real-time usage from your entire home and devices connected to your smart plug, helping you discover where most of your energy costs are coming from, allowing you to prevent their usage during peak hours.
    •  Set daily and monthly billing goals to limit and track your energy usage.
  • How can I optimize my experience?
    +

    • Track your carbon footprint to understand the environmental impact of your household's energy consumption.
    • Analyze your usage trends on the mobile app to learn more about your personal habits.
  • If I don't have a mobile device can I still participate in the program
    +

Unfortunately, if you do not have a mobile device, you will not be able to participate in the Critical Peak Pricing program. But, you are still welcome to participate in the Real Time program and have this information available to you through your MyLondonHydro portal.

  • What constitutes an "emergency situation" and how often do they occur?
    +

An emergency situation occurs when the demand for energy in Ontario is unusually high, which causes stress on the power system. By powering down major appliances during this time, Ontario residents can help alleviate this stress, thus improving the efficiency of the power grid. Emergency situations are estimated to last for approximately one hour and will occur 10-20 times during the duration of this pilot project.

  • If I decide to override the emergency situation will I still have the higher rate?
    +

Yes, when you chose to override the emergency situation you will only be stopping the automatic shut off of the connected devices. The higher rate will still occur, but this is compensated by a reduced off-peak rate.

  • Do I have to be home when this is installed?
    +

Yes, we will need you to be home so that our qualified, certified professionals will be able to install the load controller.

  • How does the Critical Peak Program work?
    +

With the permission of the qualified customer, a smart circuit controller will be installed on up to three circuit breakers at your electrical panel. Additionally, the customer will also receive a smart receptacle and a data transmission hub, as well as a reduced off-peak energy rate. In the event of an emergency situation (events lasting for an hour), a notification will be sent to the customer to inform them of an upcoming increased rate for energy, and that the devices connected to the smart circuit controller and receptacle will be turned off for this period. This automated control helps you save energy and money during these critical events! The customer always has the option of "override" from the events through the mobile app to keep power to their devices.

  • Which appliances work best? Which appliances should I not use?
    +

For the load controller, appliances that draw large amounts of energy such as electric baseboard heaters, pool pumps, and electric water heaters, will allow you to maximize the effectiveness of the devices on your home. Other small appliances such as portable ACs, home audio systems, etc. may be used on the smart plug. Any critical appliances used as life support should not be used for this pilot.

  • Will you have access to any other systems in my house? Will you be able to control my whole house?
    +

No, we will not have access to any other system in your house. We will only have access to the devices connected at the time of installation (suggested appliances were listed in the previous question).

  • I don't want strangers in my house. How will I know if the people who arrive are legitimate?
    +

We understand your concern for security. Rest assured that the installation will be done by qualified, certified professionals working on behalf of London Hydro. When the installers come to your door you can ask them to produce identification that will show that they are working on behalf of London Hydro.

  • What if they break my system? Will they pay to fix it?
    +

The installation will be done by qualified, certified professionals working on behalf of London Hydro. They are well trained and will carry appropriate liability insurance.

  • What if I don't have a mobile device but want to participate in the CPP program?
    +

Overriding from events is only possible through the mobile app. Unfortunately, if you do not have a mobile device, you will not be able to participate in the Critical Peak Pricing program. But, you are still welcome to participate in the Real Time program and have this information available to you through your MyLondonHydro portal.
  • If I decide to override the CPP event, will I still have the higher rate?

    +

Yes, when you chose to override the CPP event you will only be stopping the automatic shut off of the connected devices. The higher rate will still occur. We recommend participating in the CPP events in order to gain the most benefit out of the pilot program.
  • What if I don't have a mobile device?

    +

Energy data that is available through the mobile app will also available through your MyLondonHydro account.

  • What is the lower off-peak pricing and higher CPP event pricing?
    +

Pricing for the Critical Peak Pricing pilot is reflected below. The CPP rate of 59.6¢/kWh will only be in effect during the 36 one-hour events. Your usual off-peak rate of 6.5¢/kWh will be replaced with the lower rate of 6¢/kWh for the entire 12 month program. Once the program is complete pricing will revert back to regulated Time-Of-Use pricing.

  • If I participated in the Peaksaver PLUS thermostat program, will this interfere with the use of my thermostat?
